After being defeated by Anderson Silva on a middleweight title fight, Demian Maia is
coming from two consecutive wins and will now face the Philippine Mark Muñoz, in June 11th,
in UFC 131, which will take place in Canada. The black belt is doing the final adjustments
of his training in Salvador, Bahia, and on the interview, that you can check below, he analyzed
the possibilities when fighting Muñoz, guaranteed he has no problems in fighting with his back against
the floor in case he’s taken down, talked about the possibility of going down to the welterweight
division, among many other subjects.
How is your final preparation for this bout against Mark Muñoz?
Man, we’re training hard as always on this final phase of the trainings here in Salvador.
I’m going from Bahia directly to Canada.
He has good takedowns and a good ground and pound game.
Do you think he’ll try to take you down, knowing you offer much danger
while fighting with your back against the ground?
With me, he’ll only have two options: or he’ll want to strike, or, in case he wants
to take me down, he’ll use his ground and pound game, like he always does.
I can’t possibly know what he’ll decide to do, it’s up to him. I have to train and
be prepared for anything.
Do you believe that working with your back against the floor would be a
good possibility for you entering this bout? Would you be cool with that?
Yeah, I’m always cool fighting form the bottom. I’ve been training it, I do Jiu-Jitsu
for many years and the only difference is that in Jiu-Jitsu you don’t have to train
the guard to prevent you from being punched right in the face when you have your
back against the floor.
And how are the stand-up and Wrestling trainings going?
Man, I always train the stand-up game, Jiu-Jitsu and takedowns, so it’s not any
different now. I went to the United States a few times, like I did a little while ago when
I went there to train Wrestling, specifically the take downs part, but I’m always training
Wrestling, because I believe Wrestling is a part of Jiu-Jitsu, so what I do is train Jiu-Jitsu
and also train the takedowns, because without it I can’t bring my opponent to my game,
which is the ground game.
Many people would like to see you fighting Rousimar Palhares. Have you thought
about it?
No. I don’t even know what he’s up to, when he last fought, when he’ll fight again, if he’s
injured or not… Actually I don’t see us fighting each other so soon.
Do you believe that a win may bring you closer to a title shot?
I hope so, but that’s not my focus. I’m worried about with dealing with what I have to deal
with now, which is fighting Muñoz.
Do you guess Muñoz will be a greater challenge than you had when you fought
and defeated Kendall Grove?
I guess it’ll be bigger because he’s coming from two wins and he had did a pretty tough
fight with Okami, and despite he lost, he still is one of the bests. He’s an American
national Wrestling champion, so he’s a guy who’s top in what he does… He knocked out Kendall
Grove, the guy I beat up on a unanimous decision of the judges, so he deserves to be respected
and seen as a great challenge like I told you.
Many people say you should go down to the welterweight division and that
you’d be a good contender to fight St. Pierre. Have you thought about it?
Do you believe you have the physical structure to go to a lighter weight class?
It went through my mind, because many people tell me this, but actually I don’t
consider doing it. I want to be the champion in my own weight class. Then, someday, maybe…
We’ll see.
What can the Brazilian fans expect from you in this fight?
They can expect that I’m more mature than I was and that I have more weapons.
This time it won’t be any different. I have some new weapons, and I hope I can use it
on the bout.

Demian Maia wants spot on UFC in Rio
Saturday, January 15th, 2011Photo Josh Hedges
The year of 2010 ended with a good score for the Brazilian Demian Maia. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt won three of his four fights and suffered only one loss, which happened on a title fight against the middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Demian still doesn’t have any bout scheduled and the only certain thing is that he’d really like to fight on UFC Rio, which happens on August 27th at HSBC Arena, in Rio de Janeiro.
“I’m waiting… I’d like to fight in Brazil in August, it’s what I want the most, but there’s nothing confirmed. My manager is talking to the guys there”, said Demian, excited with the possibility of fighting again in Brazil after over four years. “I can’t say much, I’ve fought MMA few times in Brazil and for me it’d be, like the Americans say, priceless”.
