Ed Soares Happy Demian Maia Stepped Up To Plate

Friday, February 26th, 2010

in MMA News
Although he tends to complain about every opponent put in front of Anderson Silva and comes up with reason why the Silva camp doesn’t want to fight certain people, Ed Soares, mouth piece and manager to Silva, finally seems happy about an opponent picked out for Anderson Silva:

“I think it’s a shame that Chael wasn’t able to take the fight because I know with all that crap he was talking about Anderson this and Anderson that it would be interesting for him to put all those things he had to say into the octagon,” Soares said. “But then again, you’ve got Demian Maia here who is a guy who submitted Chael stepping up here and taking the fight on less-than-two-months’ notice.

“We appreciate Demian stepping up and taking the fight on such short notice, and now you’ve got two of the best at what they do stepping into the octagon.”

Nobody More Surprised Than Demian Maia About Anderson Silva Fight

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010
Written by Tom Ngo

Most fans were surprised Demian Maia received the nod to replace the injured Vitor Belfor at UFC 112, but nobody was more shocked that Maia would challenge Anderson Silva for his crown than the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu wizard himself.

We all know how unpredictable and unreliable the Internet rumor mill can be, so when Maia caught wind that he would be Silva’s next foe, he took matters into his own hands on Friday afternoon and started dialing.

“Alonso, have you heard about the news?” Maia asked Marcelo Alonso of Sherdog.com. “I’m going to fight Anderson for the belt!”

Maia was like a kid in a candy store when his cell inexplicably rang with the UFC on the other end. It was an opportunity of a lifetime and he wasn’t about to pass it up even after just taking a unanimous decision over a gritty Dan Miller last Saturday at “UFC 109: Relentless.”

“I still can’t believe I was chosen,” Maia emphatically stated. “When my manager called me, I immediately said, ‘Yes.’ After all, I dreamed of that possibility my whole life.”

The middleweight owns an impressive 12-1 professional record and has finished off eight of his opponents via some form of wicked submission.

Although Maia realizes the opportunity that awaits him, he knows it can quickly become his biggest nightmare as “The Spider” is no joke. Having won 11 consecutive en route to cementing his spot as MMA’s baddest 185-pounder, Silva will be looking to make his seventh successful title defense.

“I respect him very much,” Maia said of the champion. “I consider Anderson and BJ [Penn] the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but I’ll train hard to beat him. I don’t want to waste the chance of my life.”

UFC 112 will be taking place at the Concert Arena in Abu Dhabi on April 10th.

Demian Maia Will Begin Training Ths Week For UFC 112

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

in Fightline.com

by Tim Ngo
Now that UFC middleweight Demian Maia has accepted the challenge of trying to hand champ Anderson Silva his first loss in 11 fights, the talented Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner is formulating his schedule for the April 10th showdown.

“I [rested last] week [and will continue] until half way through [this] week, then I’ll get back to training,” Maia told GracieMag.com. “That will be enough time for my body to rest, because generally that’s how long I rest, about 10 days.

“This time, I’ll have to pick up the pace a bit quicker than I plan to with four months of prep time.”

With Vitor Belfort’s abrupt exit from UFC 112, the organization was left scrambling for a suitable last-minute replacement to face Silva. Although he was just six days removed from his unanimous decision victory over Dan Miller and only 57 days before the UFC debuted in Abu Dhabi when he got the call, it wasn’t even a question when the offer was extended.

Although the timing wasn’t ideal, Maia gladly accepted the challenge of fighting Silva for his middleweight title at UFC 112 on April 10th.

What was Demian Maia’s greatest moment in Jiu-Jitsu?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

by Marcelo Dunlop

Forget for a minute Demian Maia the UFC fighter, and his upcoming bout against Anderson Silva, on 10 April in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

As a Jiu-Jitsu fighter, this Sao Paulo native was (is) without a doubt one of the best athletes of his generation. But what would be his greatest moment as an amateur athlete, a ground fighter? Was it the title he won in the 88kg division of ADCC 2007?

GRACIEMAG.com relayed the question to the fighter himself, who replied as quickly as he slaps on an armbar: “It was in the gi: the final of the World Cup 2005, against Jacaré.”

In fact, at the time of now-extinct tournament, Ronaldo Jacaré was experiencing a period of supremacy rare in sport, during which no one could pose a threat, with nobody making it to the end of regulation time. And no human beat him.

Reminiscent of Anderson, right? But forget the UFC for ten minutes and enjoy the match below.

Demian in UFC 112: “This is the best carnival of my life”

In a recent GRACIEMAG.com interview, Demian Maia said it would take some time before he’d get his shot at Anderson Silva in the UFC. The loss to Nate Marquardt would have perished the possibility. However, things change. Vitor Belfort’s injury opened up a berth in the title fight, to be held April 10 in Abu Dhabi. And Dana White called on the Jiu-Jitsu black belt to fill that berth.

“It couldn’t be any better! This is the best carnival of my life!” celebrates Demian.

“Excellent! It was just what I wanted, something I fought for my entire life. I’ve been preparing myself for this my whole life and to have this opportunity now is great,” he added.

You just fought at UFC 109, on February 6. Can you possibly rest your body enough to fight again April 10?

This is the opportunity I can’t pass up. It may happen only once in my lifetime. It’s not the ideal amount of time, but, at the same time, it’s not bad. I’m coming off a fight and I’m not out of rhythm. I’ll rest this week until half way through next week. Then I’ll get back to training. That will be enough time for my body to rest, because generally that’s how long I rest, about 10 days. The difference is that, this time, I’ll have to pick up the pace a bit quicker than I plan to with four months of pre time.

What is your take on this opportunity against Anderson, probably the most important fight of your career?

I’ve had seven fights in the UFC, I’ve competed in countless Jiu-Jitsu championships and been in really difficult situations. I’ll keep doing what I do and try to be as perfect as possible, in training and in carrying myself. For sure this will be the most important fight, but each fight I go into is the most important. The last one was, the one I lost was, too, because they could lead me to the title. So it’s always important.

Demian vs. Anderson: “I still can’t believe it”

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

By Eduardo Ferreira

After Vitor Belfort’s injury, first reported by TATAME.com, everybody waited for Anderson Silva’s new opponent in Abu Dhabi, but the wait is over. One of the title contenders in the UFC middleweight division, Demian Maia confirmed via Twitter that he’ll get the title shot at UFC 112, on April 10.

TATAME.com is the first to talk with the BJJ ace after the confirmation. “I knew about it last night. I still can’t believe it. My manager called me and they asked if I wanted to fight for the belt. I said ‘of course, you don’t even have to ask it’”, Demian told.

Coming from a victory over Dan Miller at UFC 109, Demian will have two months to get ready and set a strategy for the most important fight of his life. “I’ll have time to prepare an strategy. I’m coming from a heavy training and I’m in a fight rhythm. I’ll let my body rest this week and I’ll start the training next week”.

“I still don’t know where I’ll train, but I’ll go train Boxing with (Luis Carlos) Dorea for sure. My physical preparation wlll be with (Rafael) Alejarra”, Demian revealed, confirmed the training with the Nogueira brothers Boxing coach and Wanderlei Silva’s ex physical trainer.

In the fight, indeed, Maia promises a lot of Jiu-Jitsu. “If I say to you that I’m gonna exchange with him I’ll be lying. It’s the same thing if I say he’ll go to the ground with me. But I’ll go to this fight ready for everything. It’s a title fight and the title always was my dream. I imagined having this title shot a year ago, but I had two more fights and God, for one reason,  gave it to me now”, said.

Everybody waited for the UFC to announce Silva vs. Chael Sonnen to the title fight, also Demian. I think (Chael) Sonnen is not recovered from the fight against Nate Marquardt and won’t have time to get ready to this. They looked for the top guys and I was the choice”, finished the Brazilian. Stay tuned at TATAME.com for more news on UFC 112.

Maia steps up to face Silva at UFC 112

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

By Thomas Gerbasi UFC

Following a hard-fought three round win over Dan Miller at UFC 109 that showed him to be more than just a submission expert, Demian Maia will jump right back into training camp for the biggest fight of his career – an April 10th meeting with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 112 at Ferrari World on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Maia replaces countryman Vitor Belfort, who underwent emergency surgery on his left shoulder earlier this week to fix a chronic injury that got worse in his training camp for Silva.

“It’s always tough when a top fighter like Vitor Belfort has to pull out of a big title fight, but we have found a high quality replacement,” said UFC President Dana White. “Top contender Chael Sonnen was not available due to injuries sustained in his fight with Nate Marquardt, so top six middleweight Demian Maia will step in to fight for the title. Maia is an Abu Dhabi grappling champion, a five-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, and he is 12-1 in MMA and coming off a win over Dan Miller at UFC 109. Anderson Silva vs Demian Maia will be a matchup between MMA’s best striker and MMA’s best grappler.”

A 32-year old native of Sao Paulo, Brazil who, like Silva, owns a black belt in jiu-jitsu, Maia (12-1) has won six of his seven UFC bouts, including five by submission, with four of those victories earning him Submission of the Night honors. He also holds a 2009 submission win over number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen. In his most recent bout, at UFC 109 on February 6th, Maia went three rounds with talented New Jersey native Dan Miller and earned a near shutout unanimous decision. Now he will face the pound for pound king in Silva, who is unbeaten in ten UFC bouts and looking to add to his middleweight title defense record when he puts his belt on the line for the sixth time.

In the co-main event of UFC 112, lightweight champion BJ Penn looks to continue his dominant reign when he takes on Frankie Edgar. Also, two legends meet for the first time when future UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes battles groundfighting master Renzo Gracie.

Demian is the adversary of Anderson in the UFC 112

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

by Advice of Communication

Dana White:

- “It’s always difficult when a top fighter like Vitor Belfort has to leave a great fight for the title, but we found an alternative to time. The number one challenger, Chael Sonnen, would not fit due to injuries sustained in the fight with Nate Marquardt, then the top six of the medium, Demian Maia, will fight for the title.

Interview To Demian Maia Post Fight UFC109

Friday, February 12th, 2010

in Report MMA

The fans saw a different Demian Maia in action at UFC 109. Replacing standing against Miller and Dan working on the ground and pound the ground, the black belt he won his first points for the UFC. In an exclusive interview with TATAME, Demian spoke of his sixth victory in the Octagon, who should be his next opponent and Chael Sonnen victory over Nate Marquardt, can register a dispute over belt.

His strategy was to just stay in striking?

My strategy was to put down only the good and rest assured the striking, drop me a little more, see how I felt. Wanted to play with enough patience, not to risk a lot to me that the same test, but the idea was to play in Jiu-Jitsu.

Do you think he avoided the floor with you?

He avoided a lot, wanted to stand with me, but it is normal. Most opponents I fight will want to stand against me. When I got to go to the ground was near the grid, then worked the ground and pound. I did not play much to pass, waited for him to give me the opening, but he did not, so I was hitting my spots and assuring. In the second round, especially, I found a good distance and decided to test me, see how I felt. I felt good, played with confidence.

What did you think of that first win on points in the UFC?

He did not open lot of space, but I did not sought much space. This was a key fight in my career because I could see that I am prepared. I never tried standing in a fight and I did.
You know who will be your next opponent?

I do not know, but I want to get in line dispute belt again. Now only depends on them (UFC).

You came off a loss to Nate Marquardt and had already finalized the Chael Sonnen. Were you surprised by the victory of Sonnen about Nate?

I was not surprised one bit, talked to everyone who Chael had great chances to win. To win it has to have a very good guard, an excellent and striking a reasonable ground for it will put you down. He bears ass and not easy to be finalized, it is one of the hardest games to be beaten in the UFC.

If I could choose, what would you prefer: a rematch with the Marquardt or a fight against Sonnen to define who dispute the belt?

UFC always boot winner against winner, then, if it were to dispute the belt, I would be more fair against Chael, but we’ll see. I’m not worried about it. I just want to be a better athlete and get there on time.

Do you consider just the Sonnen fight for the belt?

In a way it is, because he won three quarries (Dan Miller, Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt), only had uphill struggle, and he lost me. I think just the way I thought (I dispute the belt) when I won it, but I think they’ll give it to himself. I do not know what criteria, but I just, yes.

You think it no chance to beat Anderson Silva or Vitor Belfort?

I prefer the Brazilian, I will cheer for them, but it can. I greatly admire Anderson and Victor, but he’s game to win any of the weight.

Demian Maia: “Dan Miller bout was ‘Key fight in his career”

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Maia[8]

Last Saturday night at UFC 109, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist Demian Maia decided to implement a striking game for his bout with Dan Miller and ultimately succeeded as he gained a unanimous decision for the win and veer away from his disappointing KO loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC 102 last August. Now, Maia feels he must continue to improve to become an all around top fighter and once a title shot is presented to him is when he believes the time is right for just that.

In a interview with Tatame.com with translation from URDirt.com, Maia says that his plan was to take Dan Miller to the ground to do what he does best, but in the end felt very comfortable with his new found ability to strike on the feet.

“He avoided a lot, wanted to stand with me, but it is normal. Most opponents I fight will want to stand against me. When I got to go to the ground was near the fence, then worked the ground and pound. I did not play much to pass, waited for him to give me the opening, but he did not, so I was hitting my spots and assuring. In the second round, especially, I found a good distance and decided to test me, see how I felt. I felt good, played with confidence.”

With the win at UFC 109, Maia is back in the hunt for the middleweight championship and when asked about Chael Sonnen’s performance in a win over Nate Marquardt, the Brazilian was not surprised that Sonnen would come out on top and had one of the toughest strategies to fight against within the organization.

“It didn’t surprise me not one bit, I was telling everyone that Chael had a good chances to win. To beat him you have to have a good guard, excellent striking and a reasonable ground game, because he will take you down. He can take a beating and he isn’t easily submitted, it’s one of the toughest to beat strategies in the UFC.”

Maia even feels that the UFC’s decision to make him number one contender is “fair”, but says that fellow Brazilians Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort would come out on top if the UFC 112 faces Sonnen, but admits that the Team Quest fighter still has a chance.
