Dana White: ambitious predictions for the UFC

On the eve of  New Year’s, Dana White is thrilled to make forecasts for the next decade. In an interview on the Las Vegas Sun, the hat of the UFC itself to a further growth. “UFC will be the biggest sport in the world by 2020.

People were saying I was a lunatic 10 years ago when we first got this going, but the stuff we’re working on right now on so many levels is mind-boggling.

The UFC will be on network television in the coming years, but we’re not going to go out and do a stupid deal because we don’t need them. We built this thing without help from anybody, and that’s why the UFC has been able to flourish even in these hard times.

The sport was just sanctioned in Massachusetts and Vancouver. We’re going to get it done in Ontario and New York in 2010. And we’re already working on taking the UFC global. We’ve already done Germany, England and Ireland, and we just sold 22,000 seats for an event in Australia in 15 minutes, beyond the live broadcast to 175 countries.”

Demian Maia’s Bait-and-Switch

I wanted to point it out because it shows just how advanced his BJJ game is.  He starts by allowing his opponent to start passing his guard.  While Herman tries to push Maia’s knee to the mat, Demian grabs wrist control and extends his arm forward.  When Herman posts up on his left side, Maia brings his right leg back towards his head and then up around Herman’s controlled arm into a triangle.

THIS is an example of world-class jiu jitsu.

We may have to name this the Demian Maia Award when it’s all said and done, but it’s hard not to get more and more impressed with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu wizard with each fight. And it’s not just his technique, it’s the fact that every time he steps into the Octagon, his opponent knows what he’s going to do – and (with the exception of Nate Marquardt) they still can’t stop it. Let’s be honest – when you face Maia, you don’t have to worry about him throwing flying knees or brutal crosses or winning fights with his ground and pound. He’s going to try to submit you. And even if you have some success early, like Sonnen did, eventually, like creeping death, he’s going to get you. In this fight, it was a beautiful takedown right into a triangle choke that spelled doom for Sonnen. For my money, Maia is as scary with submissions as Brock Lesnar is with his ground and pound.

Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller promoted to UFC 109 main card

A middleweight bout between Demian Maiaand Dan Miller has been moved from the unaired preliminary portion of UFC 109 to take a vacated spot on the televised main card portion of the card.A spot on the main card was vacated after Brandon Vera vs.Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was scrapped from the event when Nogueira was forced to withdraw from the fight due to a fractured ankle.
Vera was initially thought to remain on the UFC 109 card against Jon Jones, however, Jones’ camp asked for the UFC to push the bout back to March. They are now fighting each other on March 21 in Denver as the light-heavyweight headliner of the UFC’s first live event on Versus.
With the decision to move Maia vs. Miller to the UFC 109 pay-per-view main card, it means that five other prelim bouts will now have a chance to be on the Spike TV one-hour broadcast of two select UFC 109 preliminary card bouts. The possibilities includeJustin Buchholz vs. Mac Danzig, Melvin Guillard vs. Ronnys Torres, Tim Hague vs. Chris Tuchscherer, Rob Emerson vs. Phillipe Nover and Rolles Gracie vs. Mostapha Al Turk.
Maia (11-1) suffered his first career loss in his last bout, as he was knocked out byNate Marquardt at UFC 102 in August. He previously won the first 11 bouts of his career, including wins in his first five UFC bouts, all by submission, with the Octagon wins coming over Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry and Chael Sonnen.
Miller (11-2) has not fought since suffering his first UFC loss against Chael Sonnen via unanimous decision at UFC 98 in May. He was originally slated to fight CB Dollaway at UFN 19 in September but was forced out of that event with an injury. Prior to the loss against Sonnen in May, he was on a 10-bout unbeaten streak, which included wins in his first three UFC fights over Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich and Jake Rosholt.
UFC 109 takes place on Feb. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV and is headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between UFC Hall-of-Famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman.

Demian Maia fighter says in RedeTV

Cris Lyra receives Demian Maia fighter of the middleweight class of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In the studio RedeTV!, The guest account on the career and recalls the victories and the toughest opponents he faced in the octagon. On the importance of sport in your life, Demian says, “When I was a kid, lived with people who drank and used drugs, but because of the sport, never got involved with it.” In tribute to the athlete, the program displays one of his most exciting fights in the tournament, against the American Ed Herman. The same program, viewers will give the fight between the Americans Bj Penn and Sean Sherk and confrontation between the Mexican Diego Sanchez and David Bielkheden Swedish. UFC-Without Limits airs at 23:30, with narration of Marco Tulio Ramirez, comments from Fernando Navarro and Eduardo Grimaldi and presentation of Cris Lyra.

No one better than Demian Maia, who was in the octagon of UC, to comment on the struggle itself. UFC Sem Limite in this Saturday (12), at 23.30, on Rede TV!, give a gift to viewers and will take the black belt to evaluate their participation in UFC 83, held in 2008 in Canada. On occasion, the Brazilian faced the American Ed Herman in a major confrontation. Another fight that appears under the program between the Hawaiian star BJ Penn, champion of the lightweight category against compatriot Sean Sherk in Las Vegas at UFC 84. Lovers of the MMA also attend the clash between Diego Sanchez and David Bielkheden at UFC 82, which happened in Ohio, also in 2008. The program airs at 23:30 in RedeTV!.

Demian Maia:: TATAME:: new interview

After the knockout suffered against Nate Marquardt, Demian Maia is training hard to avoid being surprised again. The tough-guy will face Dan Miller in his return to the UFC, in February, and is sharpening his Boxing in Salvador, Bahia. In an exclusive chat with TATAME, Demian spoke about his training, assesses his division, and comments on fights that will happen in the UFC, among other things. Check out the complete interview with the blackbelt below.

How’s the training?

It’s excellent, I’m here in Salvador, training with the guys here, I train in São Paulo as well with my Boxing coach… I have a lot of good guys to train with me, my physical preparation is excellent, I’m able to concentrate here in Bahia, I don’t have the concerns that I have in São Paulo, I have quality Jiu-Jitsu training… I’m doing fine.

You were close to fighting for the belt, but suffere that defeat to Nate… What new things do you bring for your return against Dan Miller, to avoid being surprised?

Surprises always happen and I can’t say that something will never happen again, because it can always happen. I always trained a lot, but now I have a different focus, looking to invest in everything that I need, I’m doing everything that I can to improve in all aspects and arts.

Do you know what his game is?

I know that he is a guy that fights well standing and on the ground, he won plenty of fights by submission, but I haven’t yet started to study him. I didn’t get it yet, but I’m gonna get his DVD to watch his fights. For me, the clinch is always a good deal. Although I’m evolving a lot standing up, my weapon is Jiu-Jitsu, my stand-up could be a secret weapon.

The middleweight division is one of the most competitive of the UFC…

Honestly, there are several good guys with me, I think it’s gonna be a big mess. They’re having trouble arranging who will face Anderson, it seems that it will be Vitor Belfort now … This category has Bisping, Wanderlei, Nate, Anderson, who’s the champion, there’s a lot of god people… I think that a lot of turnarounds are going to happen, we’ll see what’s going to happen. I saw that I was ranked 4th in the division, below Nate and Anderson.

How would you analyze the fight between Vitor and Anderson?

Everyone that I know and that knows the tow of them wouldn’t gamble on a prediction, nobody knows who will win. It’s a very complicated fight for them, for the public it will be great, an excellent fight. Vitor is an explosive guy right from the start, like a 100 m dash. Vitor has a good chance in the beginning and Anderson is very technical. If he goes taking the fight and bringing Vitor into his game, he’ll thrive.

And the fight between Minotouro and Brandon Vera?

That fight will be tough. Minotouro beat Banha, a guy who was undefeated in his career, who’s excellent, a guy who, if he had won, would have been in place to fight for the title… Now, he will face Brandon, who is another top guy as well, and if he wins he will be close to fighting for the belt, which is well deserved, because he not only has a history in the UFC, but in Japan in Pride.

What can the public expect from your return?

They can expect the same aggressive fight as always, just with more experience, knowledge, and much more at home in the octagon, and always looking to put on the best show possible. I like to fight for the fans, it’s an important part of the performance.
